AUDITIONS
True Story Theater auditions for men and people of color
Are you looking to do improvisation with heart, meaning, and joy? Come explore our Boston area troupe. True Story performs “Playback Theater,” where audience members tell true stories from their lives and actors turn them spontaneously into theater with music, dance and dialogue. Playback is used in over 50 countries to promote community-building and understanding across differences.
Time commitment for troupe members:
- rehearse 1-5pm on the first Sunday of the month;
- option to rehearse one or two other times during the month
- one weekend retreat per year
- perform for community groups at least once a month.
Intrigued? Please follow these steps:
a) Learn about True Story Theater:
- Read carefully through our website and the audition guidelines below.
- See us perform (if you haven't already).
- Come to an “PlayShop” listed on the website calendar. There you can have a first-hand experience of the playback form of improvisation and meet some of the troupe members.
(b) Tell us you are interested in joining. Then come to at least one more PlayShop and email us your answers to the application questions. While auditioning, you don't need to pay anything for the PlayShops.
(c) Explore if we're a good match:
Auditioners who seem to be a good fit will be invited to an upcoming full troupe rehearsal so you and everyone in the troupe can meet and play together. If after that we all feel good together, you would be invited by the whole troupe as a “prospective troupe member” to a 3-4 month period of training and mutual checking-out, at the end of which time full troupe membership would be offered.
"What is so extraordinary about True Story Theater is that you learn to empathize with others
while deepening your own authenticity and truth seeing of your own story.
The interplay between the audience and the actors is electric...
This troupe is perceptive, sensitive, intelligent, and very funny."
-Anna Dunwell
